THE INVASION OF THE LAVA MEN!

Following the Avengers’ battle with the Hulk in FANTASTIC FOUR #25-26, the team returns to Tony Stark’s mansion, which has suffered heavy damage during the conflict. With the Hulk defeated and vanished, the Avengers inspect the destruction left behind. Giant-Man and the Wasp prepare to leave by shrinking to miniature size, allowing Hank Pym to summon his trained flying ants for transportation. Thor also departs, returning to his civilian identity as Dr. Donald Blake, while Iron Man remains behind to deal with repairs.

Before leaving, Iron Man welcomes Captain America as the newest member of the Avengers, expressing pride that the legendary hero has chosen to join their ranks. Captain America responds that he considers it an honor to fight alongside such a powerful group. He then leaves with Rick Jones, promising to teach the teenager some of his famous acrobatic techniques and combat skills.

After the others depart, Iron Man reflects on the irony of his situation. Although the world sees him as wealthy industrialist Tony Stark, no one knows the truth behind his armor: a piece of shrapnel remains lodged near his heart, forcing him to rely on the chest device that keeps him alive. Despite his fame and fortune, Stark privately struggles with the constant threat of death.

Several days later, a strange phenomenon occurs at one of Stark’s weapons facilities. Scientists are testing a new transistorized artillery computer when an unusual, high-pitched sound suddenly fills the factory. The mysterious vibration becomes so powerful that it tears the experimental machine apart. Stark is contacted immediately and rushes to investigate the damage.

At the same time, Ant-Man and the Wasp are conducting research inside an ant colony. While studying unusual isotopes, they are suddenly attacked by the same strange sonic disturbance. The sound drives the ants into a panic and causes the entire colony to collapse around them. After escaping, Hank realizes the mysterious vibrations may represent a major threat and begins searching for the source.

Elsewhere, Dr. Donald Blake notices reports of similar incidents occurring across the country. Realizing that the strange sounds may require the Avengers’ attention, Blake transforms into Thor and sets out to contact the team. Meanwhile, Captain America is training Rick Jones and members of the Teen Brigade when Thor arrives to summon him. Before they can leave, the mysterious sound strikes again, damaging nearby objects and proving that the threat is growing.

Thor and Captain America reunite with the Avengers at Tony Stark’s mansion, where the team analyzes reports of the strange attacks. Their investigation reveals that the disturbances are originating somewhere in the American Southwest. Giant-Man immediately notices that the location is near the Hulk’s former territory, but Rick Jones insists that the Hulk is not responsible.

Deep beneath the Earth’s surface, the true cause of the disturbances is revealed. The Lava Men, an underground civilization previously encountered by Thor, are attempting to raise a massive formation known as the Living Rock to the surface world. The Lava Men believe this weapon will destroy humanity and allow them to conquer the surface. However, Molto, a Lava Man who previously battled Thor and developed sympathy toward humans, warns their king that humanity is not their enemy.

Molto argues that peaceful communication between the two races is possible, but the Lava Men’s Witch Doctor convinces their ruler that war is necessary. The king ignores Molto’s warnings and orders the Living Rock to continue rising toward the surface.

At the same time, General Thunderbolt Ross discovers a strange growing mountain near a military missile installation. The military prepares to respond, fearing the phenomenon may be dangerous. Bruce Banner unexpectedly returns to the base and begins studying the strange formation. While examining the Living Rock, Banner realizes that it is connected to the mysterious sound waves causing destruction across the country.

Banner reflects on his tragic past, remembering how he was transformed into the Hulk after being exposed to gamma radiation while saving Rick Jones during a failed gamma bomb test. He recognizes that his curse as the Hulk could once again complicate matters, especially if he transforms during the crisis.

The Avengers arrive at the military site aboard their helicopter and begin investigating the strange structure. Iron Man approaches the formation first, using his armor’s protection and repulsor technology to examine it. The team discovers that the object is not simply a rock formation—it is a living, growing substance capable of releasing devastating sound waves.

Iron Man breaks through the outer layer of the Living Rock, but his attack alerts the Lava Men below. Believing the surface humans are attacking them, the Lava Men begin preparing their invasion. Iron Man encounters a group of Lava Men emerging from underground, but their ability to generate extreme heat quickly overwhelms his armor.

Thor, Captain America, and the other Avengers arrive to rescue Iron Man. Thor battles through the underground tunnels while the others remain near the surface to prevent further damage. Thor confronts the Lava Men and discovers their plan: the Living Rock has grown so large that if it explodes, it could destroy the planet. The Lava Men intend to force it to the surface, where the explosion would eliminate humanity while sparing their underground civilization.

Thor realizes he cannot simply destroy the Living Rock because any direct impact could trigger the catastrophic explosion. The Lava Men reveal that the Living Rock originated from a mysterious underground explosion and has continued growing ever since. They believe their only option is to sacrifice the surface world to save themselves.

Meanwhile, Captain America battles Lava Men attempting to reach the surface. Using his shield and combat skills, he holds them back despite their incredible abilities to manipulate heat and molten rock. Iron Man and Rick Jones assist him, but the Lava Men prove to be powerful opponents.

Above ground, Ant-Man and the Wasp examine the Living Rock and discover that it has one vulnerable point. However, only an extremely precise strike can destroy it without triggering a global explosion. Restoring his larger form, Giant-Man realizes that only Thor’s hammer has enough power and accuracy to accomplish the task.

Before Thor can return, the Avengers encounter another unexpected problem—the Hulk appears. Still unaware of the full situation, the Hulk attacks the Avengers, believing they are enemies. The team must stop him while also preventing the Living Rock from destroying the planet.

The Avengers develop a plan using the Hulk’s incredible strength to their advantage. Giant-Man manipulates the Hulk’s movements by shrinking and growing at strategic moments, while Captain America distracts him with his shield. Wasp flies directly over the Living Rock’s weak point, causing the Hulk to strike the exact location needed.

The Hulk’s massive blow triggers a controlled implosion rather than a devastating explosion, destroying the Living Rock completely and saving the world. Ironically, the Hulk unknowingly becomes the hero who prevents the destruction of both humanity and the Lava Men.

During the final battle, the Lava Men attempt to overpower Thor, but Molto intervenes and helps prevent further conflict. Thor warns the Lava Men that humanity desires peace but will defend itself if threatened again. The Lava Men retreat underground, ending their invasion attempt.

After the crisis ends, Bruce Banner is discovered injured near the battlefield. Betty Ross finds him and assumes the Hulk attacked him, unaware of Banner’s secret identity. Banner admits that the Hulk was involved but reassures her that the danger has passed—for now.

The Avengers regroup and prepare to return home. Although the immediate threat has ended, Captain America warns that their battles are far from over. Before they can leave, Rick Jones receives an emergency message from the Teen Brigade, prompting the Avengers to respond to another crisis.
