On July 6, 2018, Marvel Studios will roll out their first female-led superhero movie with Captain Marvel. The feature film will revolve around Carol Danvers – a human woman that receives special powers after an encounter with an alien race. Since the announcement of the motion picture, many fans have begun to speculate on actresses who could play the popular comic book character. Listed below is a short list of five possible leads for the Captain Marvel movie:
Yvonne Strahovski is an Australian-born actress best known for her roles on the television shows Chuck and Dexter. She is a popular choice among comic book readers to play Captain Marvel due to her looks, but some question if Strahovski can be the leading lady in a summer blockbuster?
Emily Blunt is another popular choice with comic books fans to play Captain Marvel. She is a diverse actress who has appeared in such films as Into the Woods, The Devil Wears Prada and Edge of Tomorrow. Also, Blunt possesses the right amount of star power that Marvel Studios likes to attach to it’s superhero properties.
Charlize Theron is an established Hollywood actress with several blockbusters under her belt. She won an Academy Award for her role in Monster and has starred in action films like Aeon Flux, Hancock and Mad Max: Fury Road. Theron has the talent to play the female superhero and may even be the most popular choice for the role, but some question her age in a role that could see a few sequels.
Katee Sackhoff has openly expressed her desire to play a female superhero and Captain Marvel may just be the role she has been clamoring for. The Battlestar Galactica and Longmire actress has long been a choice to play the superhero and was even rumored to be attached to the film at one point. However, nothing concrete has come out from Marvel’s camp.
Amber Heard has had a relatively quiet career in Hollywood having co-starred in films like The Rum Diary, Drive Angry and Magic Mike XXL. However, playing Captain Marvel could be the role that makes her a leading lady. She certainly has the looks and acting ability to pull off the character.
In addition to these actresses, there have been plenty of other females bandied around to play Captain Marvel. Among the more popular names are: Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), Emma Watson (Harry Potter movies), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) and Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games).
